What is Driving Biodiversity Loss & Where Do We Go From Here?
Key Drivers of Biodiversity Loss:
Habitat loss through land and sea use changes: Conversion of forests to farms, urban expansion.
Overexploitation: Unsustainable resource use, including wildlife trafficking.
Pollution: Environmental contamination driven by overconsumption.
Climate change: Rising temperatures and extreme weather impacting ecosystems.
Invasive species: Non-native species disrupting local biodiversity.
What can we do?
Act at home and work:
Practice mindful eating and smart consumption: buying only what you really need and choosing sustainable products.
Aim for zero waste when possible: Rethink/redesign, Refuse/reduce, Repair/refurbish, Reuse/repurpose, Recycle/recover.
Cut energy use for home, travel, and everyday activities.
Collaborate for impact.
Support and pafticipate in local initiatives that protect biodiversity.
Support those working on conservation on key regions of the world.
Advocate for policy change.
Engage with political, industry, and community leaders advocating for policies that drive positive change at local, regional, and global levels.
Push for biodiversity friendly practices at every level
Audio Recording Misidentification?
The Tiny Forest in Summit, NJ, is a small yet ecologically significant green space that provides a refuge for diverse flora and fauna, including local and migrating bird populations.
We have been using a Wildlife Acoustics recorder and Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology identification tools (BirdNET, Raven) to document bird vocalizations and assess species presence at the Tiny Forest.
We have to pay special attention to the mocking bird's "imitations" of other birds to confirm the realiability of the data.
